Last Friday a group of staff from Experts Exchange left the comfort of the office and headed to a local farm to volunteer with GleanSLO, a program of the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County.
GleanSLO is a local non-profit organization that partners with local farms to harvest crops that would otherwise be wasted. The fresh fruits and vegetables are then distributed through the Food Bank Coalition throughout the county to those in need. Since the program began in 2010, they have saved over 640,000 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables from going to waste – that’s over 320 TONS!
Loaded up with sunscreen and harvesting knives, the Experts Exchange crew headed out with the GleanSLO leaders to harvest lettuce from a nearby farm. They worked alongside other GleanSLO regulars and were able to harvest 2,043 pounds of lettuce for distribution in just a few hours.
