iPad (3?) Event Scheduled For Early March

For those of you who were hoping to see the next generation Apple tablet this month, I’m sorry to report that the original rumor about an iPad 3 event in February was wrong. According to a new report from AllThingsD, the announcement of the iPad 2 successor is now scheduled for the first week in March. As with most reports of this nature, this comes from unnamed sources that are allegedly close to the Apple establishment.

The same report goes on to say that the event will take place in San Francisco, “presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts”—the location that Apple typically uses for its big events.

Holding the event in March better coincides with the time that the company unveiled the iPad 2 in 2011, placing the validity of the initial February rumor into even greater question. As for whether the next-generation iPad will be the iPad 3, so-called sources are playing their cards close to the chest.

“What do you think?” replied one such source, when asked by AllThingsD whether the upcoming Apple tablet would indeed be the iPad 3. As usual, all attempts to validate rumors of the timing of or plans for the event went unanswered by the notoriously secretive Apple establishment, at least when it comes to unveiling new products.

Given the surprise dealt to Apple enthusiasts during what was widely assumed to be the unveiling of the iPhone 5 last year, I wouldn’t bet on the unveiling of an iPad 3 just yet. However, leaked reports from last month do tell us what features we can expect the new Apple tablet to have, whatever its name ends up being.

Personally, the biggest question on my mind is whether we’ll see a $299 iPad 2 once the new Apple tablet is released.
