Girls rule in this week’s EE Tech News Podcast. Experts Exchange Marketing Coordinator Brittny Peloquin joins Jenn to talk about some of the issues facing women in the tech today including how a Kickstarter project could help end discrimination of female gamers and what Yahoo! is doing to help employees with a new baby at home.

Our guest this week is Amy Kardel, the owner of IT services company Clever Ducks. Amy talks with Jenn and Brittny about Sheryl Sandberg’s new book, Lean In, and  what it’s like to start a company with four young children at home.

Kickstarter project shines a light on discrimination of female gamers

While women are making great strides towards equality in the workplace overall, it seems that women in the gaming industry still face a good deal of discrimination. Whether it’s being called inappropriate names or being sexually harassed, the verbal abuse female gamers often suffer is prohibiting women from entering the gaming industry.SONY DSC

Female gamer Shannon Sun-Higginson recently launched a Kickstarter project to fund a documentary that shines a light on the issue and hopefully help end the discrimination. Her film is called “GTFO,” a reference that Sun-Higginson says refers to “the exclusionary response that many women encounter while gaming.” In the film, she interviews gamers, bloggers, developers and other women in the gaming industry about their experiences–both good and bad.

The pledge goal for the GTFO Kickstarter project is $20,000. With eight days to go, the project is sitting at nearly $16,000. More information about the project, including how to donate, can be found on the GTFO Kickstarter page.
