Outage Watch: Twitter, Google Chat & Windows Azure Crash in Same Day [UPDATE]

If your work or personal morning routine includes social media or chatting, you were likely affected by at least one outage this morning.  Likely setting some sort of outage record for major Internet services, Thursday morning saw the outage of Windows Azure in Europe, Google Chat, and Twitter. And while the first two are back online as far as the Windows Azure and Google Chat status pages are concerned, Twitter has remained dormant since being reported down just about an hour ago.

According to the Twitter status page, “Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.”

Responding to requests for additional comment, a Twitter spokeswoman reiterated the same. “We’re aware of the issue and are looking into it,” she stated. “Will let you know when we have an update.

In addition to the fact that Twitter remains down as Google Chat and Windows Azure are successfully back online, this latest Twitter blackout comes as a particular nuisance to those of us inconvenienced by another outage just last month (and also on a Thursday). This is likely to have caused a particular sense of panic among Twitter addicts, who would say that a word like “inconvenienced” doesn’t do justice to describing the effects of the outage.

And to them I would say there is no need to worry. While it’s reasonable to assume that Twitter will eventually come back online, there is an alternative in the meantime (besides, you know, actually going and talking to people in person). Although it is reportedly “finicky” right now, Twitter Mobile is still functional.

Little else is known at this time. And for the sake of preventing widespread panic, let’s leave the implications of Twitter outages in two consecutive months for another day.

More details to follow (Get it? Get it?).

Twitter Outage Update:

You know how I said Twitter Mobile was being finicky earlier? Yeah, it’s pretty bad. With one refresh the signup/login page loads without a hitch, and then the next refresh renders the same error-riddled error message that’s showing up on the main Twitter site, which reads, “Twitter is currently down for <%= reason %>. We expect to be back in <%= deadline %>. For more information, check out Twitter Status. Thanks for your patience!” I will let you know if anything changes.

UPDATE 2: Twitter Back Online!

After showing a few faint inklings of life, Twitter appears to be back online and functioning without any apparent problems for the main site or for mobile. Feel free to comment if you are still experiencing problems so we can stay on top of the issue if that is the case. Otherwise, it would seem that all is right with the Twitter world.
