Apple iTV To Debut Mid-2012December 27, 2011 11:00 am ·
“I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use…It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud…It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.”
For those who have read the Walter Isaacson biography on Steve Jobs, these foreboding words are all too familiar. In fact, the idea of an Apple television set has been the subject of rumors for quite some time now, but there has been scant evidence of such a project in the works…until now.
Giving substance to the late Apple CEO’s excited words, a DigiTimes report has revealed that Apple plans to begin assembling the iTV in the first quarter of 2012, which is set to launch in the second or third quarter. Unlike the set-top box (STB) Apple TV that has been around since 2006, the iTV will be a complete television set.
“Media reports in Korea also indicated that Samsung Electronics started producing chips for the iTVs in November 2011, while Sharp will produce the displays for the new TVs,” the report added.
Rumor has it the iTV will come in 32- and 37-inch sizes to start.
For those who are still fond of the STB model of Apple TV, a next-generation model is likely set to launch in 2012. Meanwhile, the current version of Apple TV has seen a 9 percent price drop on Amazon in anticipation of the upgrade.
