Terra Turns Poop Into Free Wi-Fi

Rumpelstiltskin’s got nothing on Terra. In an effort to get people to keep the parks of Mexico City clean, the Mexican web portal began offering free Wi-Fi in exchange for—you guessed it—dog poop.

“When people throw away their bags of poop in a special box in the park, it calculates the weight and Terra gives everyone free minutes of Wi-Fi in the park,” Creativity-Online.com explains. “The greater the weight, the more the minutes are added—and everyone can enjoy a poo-free park.”

At this point, you’re probably experiencing the same kind of disbelief that I did when I first read about this. But you can be sure that it is indeed real. There’s even a video to prove it:

Not only is this bizarre approach to keeping parks clean real; it’s also proven to be quite effective. By literally turning dog poop into free Wi-Fi for park patrons, Terra’s crazy contraption actually keeps the streets cleaner.

“Perhaps we need poo-funded Wi-Fi systems like the good people of Mexico City have, thanks to a pilot program/publicity stunt by web portal Terra,” wonders TIME’s Doug Aamoth. “Found in 10 parks around the city, Terra has set up things that look like garbage cans connected to digitally metered scales.”

What happens when you put something other than your dog’s fecal matter in the receptacle, you ask? Nothing, says Terra. In short, if it helps keep the streets clean, that’s what matters.

So what do you think? Do you think others should adopt Terra’s model? Also, if you’ve got some clever poo for Wi-Fi taglines, please doo-doo share.
