Why Aren’t There More Women in Technology? Plus Gamification at the Office [Podcast]March 29, 2012 11:13 am ·
While the number of women in technology has grown significantly over the past few years, it’s clear that we still have a long way to go.
According to statistics released by the White House in 2011, while women make up half of the US workforce, that number falls about 25 percent in the technology industry. Only about 10 percent of technology startups are led by women and just over five percent of these get venture capital funding. In addition, a new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research released last week showed that only 5.5% of holders of all commercial patents in the U.S are female.
On this week’s podcast, database developer and EE expert Miriam Bizup joins co-host Jenn Prentice to share ideas on how to get girls interested in technology from an early age and discuss ways to navigate the tension between having a family and career that exists for many women in mid-career.
Plus, we talk about the week’s news in technology, including gamification strategies for the workplace, Apple iPad 4G problems in Australia and Apple CEO Tim Cook’s trip to China.
